Quiet Exhaust Fan Helps Make Better Living Spaces

Quiet Exhaust Fan Helps Make Better Living Spaces

March 13th, 2026

Noise is a critical factor in ventilation systems, directly influencing on comfort and daily living quality. An exhaust fan should not only remove odors and stale air effectively but also operate quietly to avoid disturbance. The following article provides some key knowledge about exhaust fan noise levels, its measurements, noise standards and how modern fan designs achieve quieter performance.

Noise level and measurement

Exhaust fan noise level is measured in decibels, expressed as dB(A), a unit designed to reflect the sensitivity of the human ear. Standard noise measurements are typically conducted at a distance of one meter, based on IEC 60704-2-80, the test code issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

Noise levels between 30 and 45 dB(A) are suitable for quiet indoor environments, based on World Health Organization guidelines. A level of 30 dB(A) is comparable to a whisper, while 40 dB(A) resembles rustling leaves or a quiet bedroom,  45 dB(A) aligns with quiet offices or classrooms, and 50 dB(A) is similar to normal conversation.

Based on these benchmarks, users can evaluate the exhaust fan noise level correctly and avoid selecting equipment that may cause discomfort in the longer term.

Classification

The exhaust fan noise level varies depending on fan size, airflow capacity, and design. Smaller fans generally produce less noise due to lower airflow volume, while larger fans may generate more sound if not properly optimized.

  • 200 × 200 mm fans: Typically operate between 26–35 dB(A), comparable to whispering sounds

  • 250 × 250 mm fans: Usually range from 28–38 dB(A), similar to rustling leaves

  • 300 × 300 mm fans: Often fall within 30–42 dB(A), equivalent to soft conversation

These ranges are considered comfortable for residential buildings, offices, classrooms and healthcare facilities when properly installed.

Exhaust fans noise primarily comes from airflow movement, accounting for approximately 60–70 percent of total sound output. Turbulence occurs when air passes through fan blades and housing structures.

The remaining noise originates from the motor and mechanical vibration, especially if components are poorly balanced or made from low-quality materials. Excessive vibration can amplify sound levels and reduce product lifespan.

Fan noise reduction technologies

Modern exhaust fans incorporate several technologies to reduce noise effectively. Airfoil-shaped axial blades are commonly used to smooth airflow, minimizing turbulence and reducing wind noise.

For systems requiring higher pressure or longer ducting, sirocco centrifugal blades with multiple small vanes distribute airflow evenly, lowering noise while maintaining strong ventilation performance.

Motor design also plays a crucial role. Dual-bearing motors, copper windings, and vibration-absorbing housings significantly reduce mechanical noise. Reinforced plastic or composite materials help dampen vibration, while dynamic balancing of blades and rotors ensures stable operation.

Thanks to these combined improvements, modern exhaust fan noise level can be reduced by 15–25 dB(A) compared to traditional fan designs.

Choosing  quiet exhaust fan

When selecting an exhaust fan, users should look for noise ratings below 45 dB(A). Designs featuring airfoil or sirocco blades significantly reduce airflow noise. Motors with copper windings and dual bearings offer quieter operation and longer service life.

Proper installation and regular maintenance also help maintain a stable exhaust fan noise level over time.
