RGB Lights open new dimensions for portrait photography
September 27th, 2022
RGB lights, capable of producing any colors, are mainly used for decoration. Photographers often take advantage of RGB light to support their portraits.
What are RGB lights and how does it work?
An example of using RGB lights for portrait photography.
RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. The RGB light uses LED packages with red, blue and green LEDs in it to produce up to 16 million different light colors by combining these three colors.
Given this color generating feature, the light is often used where various colors are required. Taking portrait photography as an example, instead of using only normal white light, photographers have recently started using RGB light to support their work.
RGB lights for the background
RGB lights are used to make a background.
Background is very important in portrait photography. Sometimes it plays the key role in a portrait. If traditionally the background is white or green, it’s time now to make a change. Nowadays in order to make a special portrait, photographers would prepare the background carefully. It could be in a single color, multi-color or even with patterns.
If a studio has several backdrops, it takes time to change them if the photographer wants to change the style, or is in the process of selecting one to match the concept.
Using RGB light will help get rid of this complicated step. With a smartphone, we can easily change the color of a white backdrop to any other color. Moreover, the effect of color changing can be checked in the camera right away.
RGB lights for directly lighting on the models
RGB lights can be put directly on the model.
Not only using RGB light for the background, but photographers also apply the light directly on the model for new effects. In the photo above, two lights of purple and blue colors are set up to light on the model. This application creates the mystery for the photo.

Many photographers try using different accessories in photo shooting. In the photo above, crystal beads are used. They light on the model and the beads as well to create the elegance of the portrait.
With 16 million visibly different colors produced by an RGB light, just imagine how many lighting setups a photographer could make? Lighting indeed is one of the most important factors in photography. Believe it or not, many courses are open just to teach us how to light. Using RGB light for portrait photography is becoming a global trend. We will easily find it at any studio.
