Points to consider before buying a reading lamp
A high-quality reading lamp is an essential companion for productive work. Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, as the term “work from home” is becoming more familiar, setting up a proper workstation is a must. While choosing a reading lamp, beyond its aesthetic value, attention should be paid to three criteria: lighting function, flexibility, and our working space.
Lighting function
Reading lamp is classified as task-lighting, which essentially means providing a sufficient amount of light directed towards the task at hand. If we are reading for relaxation purposes, consider choosing a yellow light. This warm light offers a pleasant and cozy feeling. Moreover, this type of illuminance won’t disturb melatonin production in the body since the brain connects yellow light with the sunset and perceives it as the nighttime.
On the other hand, if we are reading for work-related purposes, it is convinced to choose a white light. It will help us be focused and well-concentrated during the day. However, when it comes to white LEDs, the whiter the light, the higher the concentration of blue wavelengths. In contrast to the yellow one, blue wavelengths are proven to suppress melatonin production and even cause eye-strain. Under testing conditions, reading with a white light at bedtime can delay sleep by up to three hours. We can solve this problem by choosing a LED bulb that uses sunlike technology that does not emit high-intensity blue light.

With the advanced technologies, and to make it easier for us to choose, excellent LED reading lamps now have extra features that allow us to change the perceived color of the light. We can freely select the color temperatures that best suit our activities. If the plan is to place the reading lamp near the bed, it is even better if the light has a dimming function.
Flexibility
To optimize our posture, comfort, and well-being, choosing a lamp with a flexible arm or neck is highly recommended. With the adjustable arm, we can pull them closer for intense beams or push them further to widen the lighting, making adjustments to focus the light on exactly where we want. This design will give us more freedom when changing the postures or changing the working position.
It is advisable to have the bottom of the lampshade be at our eye-level while we work to prevent light from shining directly into the eyes, causing irritation or worse.
Working space
Finally, it is crucial to think of where we want the reading lamp. For bedroom use, as suggested earlier, we may need to consider the dimming function so it can double act as a bed lamp.
If we want to place it on the desk, consider the desk size because larger desk spaces require more illumination than smaller ones.
