Guide on choosing appropriate white light for our home

Whether we want our house to have a more calming, cozy, or vibrant vibe, there are three white light color temperatures (CCT) to choose, namely warm white, neutral white and cold or cool white, each of them influences on a place’s atmosphere in different ways. In this article, we will find out which white light CCT is best suited for each room so we could craft a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. 

What is white light? 

White light is the colorless light containing all the wavelengths of the visible spectrum. The visible light spectrum consists of red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and violet. When passing through a prism, white light is separated into its component colors. 

Many people commonly refer to white light simply as "light" or "visible light," and it is the light that makes it possible to view one's surroundings. Several sources of white light exist including the sun and stars, certain types of lightbulbs, and some lamps.

Color Temperature (CCT), measured in degrees Kelvin, is a characteristic of visible light radiated from a black body heated to a specific temperature.  

In lighting, it refers to the amount of orange vs blue hue to the white light.  "Warm light” has a more orange hue, while "cool light” has a more bluish tint to it. In other words, the lower the color temperature, the "warmer" the light, and the higher the color temperature, the "cooler" the light. 

Cool white light 

Between 4500-6500 K will produce vibrant, vivid "cool white" light. This type of light is recommended for use in display areas, security lighting or garages. 

Warm light 

Between 2700-3500 K will create a soft, relaxing light that is perfect for use in bedrooms, restaurants… 

Neutral light 

Between 3500-4500 K will create a "neutral" light that feels friendly and inviting. This light is ideal for use in offices, basements, garages and other work environments. 

Notes before picking white light for home 

While there are many things to consider before choosing white light for home, this article suggests two main things. 

The first thing to consider is the colors of walls, floor, ceiling and furnishings. For example, cool white light may be the best choice for complementing decor if the home is predominantly composed of cool colors such as black, blue, green and crisp white Warm light, on the other hand, will likely be the best bet if the home is filled with natural materials such as hardwood floors, tongue and groove ceilings, wood cabinets and furniture, woven rugs and fabrics in brown, tan, red and orange. 

The second thing to consider is the home's design. For example, certain spaces in traditional and transitional homes look best under warm white light because it resembles the glow of candlelight, gas light, and old-fashioned incandescent lights, which are reminiscent of classic homes.

Since the living room is the main area for home activities and also the place where guests are welcomed, neutral light is generally used because it gives people a pleasant, refreshing, clean, natural, and unrestrained feeling, making them feel friendly and inviting.

The kitchen 

In the kitchen, cool white light is ideal for preparing food and other recipes The kitchen will be cleaner and brighter as a result. However, because kitchens are so versatile, the white light CCT can change.

Warm light is suitable for dining space because food under low white light CCT has higher color saturation, which can improve people’s appetite.
