Accent fixtures emphasize objects in art lighting
Accent fixtures are used in accent lighting, a method to emphasize items, paintings or goods, making them dominant in the surrounding space, so that viewers can see the illuminated object easily, clearly and specifically. There are many types of accent fixtures to help emphasize the objects and we are checking on several types and purposes of the fixtures in this article.
Accent lighting
Accent lighting, also called highlighting, is a method which emphasizes objects by focusing light directly on them. The method is applied widely for indoor and outdoor lighting spaces. Points of visual interest can be created by highlighting artwork, fireplaces, plants, textured walls, or architectural details.
Using accent fixtures, we can create a dramatic space. Only directly focused on the object, the surrounding light is minimized to turn the object dominant.
We may find accent lighting in both general lighting decoration and artwork lighting spaces. In each context, the requirements for accent lighting are different. And depending on the purpose of highlighting, we can flexibly use many accent fixtures.
Pictures are emphasized by using accent fixtures.
There are many accent lighting fixtures to illuminate objects. Most of them have several common properties like narrow beam (smaller than 20 degrees), very high color rendering index (more than 90), and daily output light (3500K-4500K). It is easy to see accent fixtures in art galleries, museums, and shops. Such popular luminaries include tracklights, rotatable downlights, sconces, spotlights or MR bulbs.
Tracklight
Tracklights often come in cylinder shape. They can slide on a rack attached to a wall or ceiling; therefore, we can change their position and orientation to focus on objects in many cases.
Tracklights are used on different orientations at a fashion shop.
A tracklight is normally designed with COB LED packages covered with lens to shrink the output beam. It may vary between 15-25 degrees. Tracklights are popularly used in fashion shops, souvenir shops and art galleries.
Downlights
Downlights are recessed installed on the ceiling. The small lamps are often used in accent lighting, and widely applied indoors for general lighting. The photo below shows a restaurant, where low power downlights are shining on the walls, and combined with other lighting fixtures, they create a harmony and warm space, suitable for dating.
Downlights are arranged for accent lighting in a restaurant.
The downlight in this case does not require a narrow beam, 30-50 degrees is popular. And of course, the color rendering index (CRI) of 80 is enough. People may like warm white in this context, so downlights with 3000K or 4000K are the preferred choice.
Sconces accent fixtures
Sconces are wall-attached accent fixtures that are used to emphasize the walls for the purpose of decoration.
Sconces make walls become dominant among surrounding space.
Indirect lighting accent fixtures
Indirect beam is an effective method for accent lighting.
Hid-lighting on the back of pictures is a special accent lighting method used in museums and art galleries. This indirect illumination helps reduce light reflection so viewers can admire pictures without glare and reflection.
In art galleries and museums, the CRI is required to be as high as above 90 to reflect truly color of illuminated objects.
And there are many high quality criteria for accent fixtures like no glare, no shadow, no flicker, no reflection, etc.
