Rang Dong makes specialized LED light for deep-sea fishing
Fish is attracted by light and up to 36% of Vietnam’s annual fishing catch comes by using lighting. Having realized that Vietnamese fishermen haven’t had good lighting equipment, Rang Dong has stepped into the production of LED fishing light for the industry.
Lighting consumed a lot of fuel
A seine net fishing boat with an engine capacity of 400CV is usually equipped with 100 to 120 luminaires, while larger ships may have 300-500 units, depending on the fishing method. Each luminaire has a power of up to 1000W. In this production, the highest expense comes from oil consumption. For a 20-day fishing period, as many as 12,400 liters of oil is used, 7,440 liters of which for lighting, accounting for about 60% of the total cost. Competitive rivalry, exhausted fish source,s and high costs lead to losses, making many fishermen no longer feel passionate about sailing.

Fish is attracted by the light
According to researchers, fish temperament is strongly affected by light. For them, light is the signal of food or directions for movements. Presently, scientists have found that a variety of fish species share the same biological characteristics of being drawn into lighted areas.
Therefore, in order to raise fishing productivity, it is necessary to have scientists and manufacturers joined in well-invested research to develop LED fishing light, as well as suitable and effective solutions for Vietnamese fishermen.

Given the demand, Rang Dong Light Source and Vacuum Flask Joint Stock Company, the core of which is Rang Dong Lighting R&D Center, has cooperated with institutions and universities to research and develop LED fishing light.

Chronology
In October 2015, Rang Dong cooperated with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute to carry out the project “Research and application of LED luminaires for seine net and LED fishing light”.
Results: Rang Dong had created specialized and suitable LED luminaires for fishing. The product was tested in the coastal areas of Khanh Hoa province and was evaluated as a good LED fishing light product.
In November 2016, Rang Dong implemented the project “Research and develop the technology in experimental production and commercialization of LED Luminaires to be used in artificial lighting for high-tech agriculture on Vietnam’s market”. The project received funding from the Global Environment Fund and the World Bank.

To complete this project, Rang Dong continued research and developed specialized LED fishing light with the power of 200W and 300W.
Advantages of Rang Dong’s LED fishing light
These LED fishing lights have high luminous efficiency and energy saving. The LED light is highly oriented, so the part of lighting focused on the water surface is up to 75%. Its light intensity is so strong that the lighting goes deep into the water, thus, attracting fishes more effectively. In the case of using underwater luminaires, the useful lighting area reaches 100% and the depth of lighting is adjustable.
Highly oriented lights plus low-heat LED make fishermen’s working conditions more favorable and reduce the risk of skin, eye and hair diseases. Given LED fishing lights are semiconductor light sources, their light spectrum can be easily adjusted, so it is possible to create specialized light sources having suitable spectrum and colors for each species of fish and fishing area.

Expand cooperation
In addition, Rang Dong signed a cooperation agreement with the Seafood Research Institute, the Institute of Oceanography and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in researching, evaluating and testing LED light sources in different conditions. The company is also developing light sources for different fishing methods, such as raft luminaires, underwater luminaires and squid catching luminaires.
Finally, Rang Dong has developed specialized LED fishing light with high durability, luminous efficiency reaching over 130lm/W, which helps save electricity. When Rang Dong’s 200W LED lighting system is used to replace 1,000W metal-halide light, the oil saving rate can be up to 45%.

Research on LED luminaires
The LED luminaires use the surface anticorrosive technology specifically for the salty conditions and continuous operation can last more than 10 years, equivalent to 25,000 hours. Rang Dong’s LED luminaires are designed according to the IEC international standard, thus they can withstand lighting impulses up to 10KV and integrated with the electromagnetic compatibility EMC without affecting transmitting devices. The electronic devices are all designed, tropicalized and adapted to the inclement weather condition of Vietnam.
Each KW of electricity consumes 0.4 liters of diesel. In normal condition, on average, fishermen light up 9 hours per night, 20 days per month and 10 months a year. Once using the 200W LED luminaire instead of the 1,000W metal-halide lamp, after a year, fishermen can save up to 586 liters of diesel.
Final thought
With more than 24,000 Vietnamese fishing boats, the volume of diesel to be saved would be 133 million liters, which are worth about USD 70 million, and the amount of CO2 emission to the environment can be reduced by 359,000 tonnes, contributing to the fishing productivity.
Along with the mission of developing the economy, work at sea also means to protect national sovereignty. Given the difficult and outdated exploitation conditions, the achievements of scientific research bring meaningful and practical benefits to fishermen.
