Waterlight - A new lighting device run on seawater or urine
Waterlight is a cordless light, providing more peace of mind than solar-powered lights. This lamp works quite specifically when it can turn seawater; or salted water into electricity, and even in an emergency, users can use urine to charge and light this lamp, Dezeen magazine reported.
About Waterlight
Waterlight acts as a mini generator via the process of ionizing. Each time the light is filled with 500 ml of seawater, the salt in the water reacts with the magnesium and copper plates mounted inside the light, thereby helping to convert the salt into electrical energy. This device has a luminous time of up to 45 days. Thanks to the USB port built into the light, it can also be used to charge a phone or some other small electric devices.
Wunderman Thompson Company has cooperated with E-Dina to develop Waterlight. Seeing how locals in rural Colombia, especially the indigenous Wayúu tribe, struggle to maintain a light source at night prompted both the companies to develop waterlight. The light can help fishermen work at night more conveniently, while artisans who do crafts such as knitting, embroidery, etc. will get more orders because, unlimited to daytime working as before, they can work at any time when there is light.
This waterlight can also help prevent fires because children can get a better and safer light source for their night time study instead of candles.
Features and performance
Using waterlight is more practical than solar-powered devices because immediately after being filled with salted water, the light will glow immediately, while solar lights need time to convert solar energy into other energy to charge the battery, and they can only work when the sun is around, Dezeen magazine quoted Pipe Ruiz Pineda, executive creative director of Wunderman Thompson Colombia, as saying.
The patented waterlight became the first method to prolong the effects of ionization, allowing the lamp to produce electricity and light for a longer period of time, Pineda was quoted in a story published in April 2021. Dezeen is the world’s most popular architecture, interiors and design magazine.
This lamp has a cylindrical wooden shell and a perforated lid on the top so that water can be poured inside, and hydrogen gas from the ionization process can also escape. Over its lifetime, the waterlight can provide two to three years of light, or approximately 5,600 hours of light.
Although waterlight is not the first invention to help bring light to poor rural communities, it has the special advantage of being able to produce light almost instantaneously for 24 hours.
The waterlight project is one of many initiatives to bring light to rural communities around the world. Designer Henry Glogau's invention of using desalinated sunlight to create light has been a finalist for the Lexus Design Award. The device can both provide light and distill seawater to produce pure drinkable water.
Since 2013, the global initiative of the Lite of Light project has provided a ‘daylight system’ that brings business and light to poor communities.
