LED Tube lights T5 and T8: Features and Applications
LED tube lights are commonly used thanks to modern manufacturing technology, which not only inherits but also carries advantages far beyond the traditional fluorescent tubes. LED tube lights T5 and T8 are the most popular in civil lighting.
The tube size
Letter “T” stands for “tube”, which means tubular. In the LED tube light name, “T” implies the diameter of the tube.
- Based on international conventions: 1T = 1/8 inch; 1 inch = 2.54 cm
- T8 tube light has the tube diameter of 8T = 1 inch = 2.54 cm
- T5 tube light has the tube diameter of 5T = 5/8 inch = 1.5875 cm
- Similarly, we can calculate the diameter of tube T10 = 3.175 cm and T12 = 3.81 cm.
In the family, T5 is the smallest LED tube and T12 is the largest.

The tube length
Both the T5 and T8 models are manufactured according to the length standard of traditional fluorescent tube lights . This makes it easy for consumers to differentiate and choose alternative products. The most popular types are 30 cm, 60 cm, 90 cm, 120 cm and 240 cm.
How to install
T5 LED tube lights are usually manufactured in a seamless form and connected to the entire power cord. Simply connect the product with the power source for use.
T8 LED tube lights now have two types: T8 tube and T8 luminaire (commonly called T8 lighting fixture). T8 tube is only the tube with built-in LED PCB and driver. T8 luminaire consists of one or more tubes placed on a fixture. Designers can be flexible in taking advantage of T8 single-, or double-, and even triple-luminaires for distributing light layout in office or hall.

Energy efficiency and lighting angle
T5 and T8 LED tube lights are not only different in tube diameters but also in energy efficiency levels.
T8 LED tube light is less efficient than T5. The beam angle of the T8 fluctuates between 120° and 270°, the light is uniform and soft, while the T5 light is quite strong and focused.
Therefore, T8 LED tube lights are often used for civil projects to provide general lighting to houses, offices, supermarkets, hotels etc. The model is considered standard, popular and accepted in many countries.
