Types of switches for a smart home using Wi-Fi technology
Smart electric devices are indispensable in a smart home. But in case we’ve already installed normal devices in our living space, the fastest way to turn them smart without replacement is to change their switches. There are several types of switches using Wi-Fi technology which we can use for our smart home. Let’s take a closer look at them in the following article.
Common connected technologies
There are many types of connected technologies used in producing smart switches. The most common technologies for home switches are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi. If we want to control devices only when we are at home, BLE is a better option with ultra-low power consumption and which can support more devices. Wi-Fi is more suitable for those who want a remote control.
Three most common types of switches for a smart home using Wi-Fi technology are touch switches for lights, curtains and for water heaters.

Touch switch for lights

There are four common types of switches for lights in the market, with touch switch terminals on the panel ranging from one to four. Users can choose a suitable type for the room based on the number of lights.
For example, if the bedroom has only one ceiling light or panel light, one touch switch panel should be chosen. The living room usually has many lights, including one ceiling light in the middle and several downlights around, so a four touch switch panel is better.
A multi-touch switch is more suitable for living rooms with many types of lights.
Touch switch for curtains
A touch switch for curtains usually contains three touch terminals.
Another type of switch we recommend is touch switches for curtains. This switch works under the same principle with that for lights. The difference is in the number of touch icons on the panel, which tell the specific features such as ‘OPEN’, ‘CLOSE’ and ‘PAUSE’, while the switch for lights only has one type of touch icon as it controls the ON/OFF status.

Touch switch for water heaters
Touch switches for water heaters support devices with power up to 2,500W.
Water heater touch switch is also essential with only one button because normally there is one heater in the bathroom. Similar to the light switch, the water heater switch only supports the ON/OFF function. But it can be used for the device with power up to 2,500W while the light switch only supports up to 300W power.
With these three types of switches, users can control devices not only by touching the switches mounted on the wall, but also by using smart phone apps, that means the location can vary, as long as connection is available.
